Self Hosted Blog Now Live for One Pea in the Pod!

“Switch to a self hosted blog….it’ll be easy….” ….said no one ever!

Seriously folks I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown on multiple occasions. If you had noticed that the site was down for awhile then I’m hoping you also are checking out the new updates right now and appreciate why we were out of commission for awhile!

Previously I was blogging through a free site on WordPress.com and was totally happy with it to start. As I started getting more involved in this blog world I realized that I needed something bigger and better. That’s when I looked into self hosting.

Here is where it all got *&#!

My biggest piece of advice is SLOW DOWN! No matter how much you think you know about something you can always benefit from taking time to make decisions. I thought I had enough tech knowledge to handle this switch on my own. While I was partially right, I was also pretty wrong too.

So what did I do that was so wrong? If you’re ready for a good laugh keep reading.

First, when I bought the domain rights I chose to not be a self hosted blog from the beginning and map my name servers to my original WordPress.com site. If you’re already taking the time and money to get the rights to a domain you might as well self host your blog as well. It was my mistake to think I wouldn’t be able to handle a self hosted blog and chose to stay with what I knew. Unfortunately, it took me a few months to get up the courage to self host. I’m wondering what took me so long!

After I made the decision to switch from the free site to the self hosted blog, I began Googling and talking to anyone I knew that had experience in website development. A few people told me that it was a bad idea to self host….but 90% of those that I spoke to had no idea why anyone would NOT want a self hosted blog! That was all that I needed to take the dive!

There were a few glitches trying to remove the mapping that I had tied to my wordpress.com site. We have finally gotten everything resolved (obviously!) and have moved forward as a self hosted site. I’m so excited to be making this leap and have LOTS of amazing things planned for the blog in the near future… a small sneak peak?
