Keeping it Real… A True Life Blog Post

I’ve decided to take a more “keeping it real” approach to my blogging. I began blogging for fun but quickly got caught up and was stressed out big time. You don’t realize how much work goes into being a blogger until you get into it but man, it’s a crazy world. So here’s the thing…. I’m just going to blog, ok? If you like it you like it, if you don’t you don’t! If I make money that is super cool but as long as I get a few things to review for free  I’m probably going to count that as a win. I’ll give you a little summary of the happenings of our world and then we can move forward from there!

Thomas’ Early Intervention/Health Stuff

Early Intervention:

Currently we are working with three therapists (Speech, Physical, and Developmental) and are about to add Occupational as our fourth. He is running, walking backwards, and finally starting to climb onto the couch. He has about 12 animal sounds, says mama/dada/hi/book/no/more/all done/yes and hooray!

I took Thomas to see a Developmental Pediatrician to rule out any underlying causes for his delays and he said for sure he didn’t see any red flags for autism. He felt like Thomas had some physical characteristics of something called Noonan Syndrome and ordered some genetic bloodwork to screen him for it. After doing some Google research on the disorder, it really made sense to me and was excited we may have found an “answer”. However, the bloodwork came back normal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he’s genetically normal but now we are back at square one.

Recently I’ve been noticing some quirks that lead me to think he may have a Sensory Processing Disorder and hoping the screening with OT on Monday will give me some assurance either way.

He chews on EVERYTHING! so I bought him a chewy tube which helped to start but now its not really doing anything. When I say everything, I mean everything. I recently found him chewing the handle on our plastic Aldi bag. Pretty much everything not plastic has to be taken away from him and used only with supervision. Makes me really nervous.

While in the car, grocery cart, stroller, etc., he gets extremely upset…when it stops. He it totally happy while it’s moving but when it stops he tries to throw himself out. He also constantly needs to move when he’s at home. If the TV is on, he will stand and walk around the living room while he’s watching a show.

Last but not least, recently he gets very upset when we yell at the dog….which happens often because she is going deaf. It seems to scare him but it takes forever to calm him down from the meltdown that ensues. He’s walking on his tip toes and walks with his head tilted to the side so possibly there is a vestibular issue going on.

Ear Tubes:

Back in February, his ENT said the tubes in his ears were still in place but not functional. Not even two weeks later he had an ear infection so I called back and requested a consult to have the tubes put back in. A few weeks ago we brought him back and got the tubes replaced. I was glad we did it because the ENT said that his right ear was pretty bad so something was definitely brewing.

Growth Hormone:

Thomas is doing AWESOME! with growth hormone therapy! He is 32″ and 25lbs and finally on the growth chart! He is so close to outgrowing his 18 month pants but everything else he is wearing 24 months and 2T clothes. It makes me so happy to see him play with friends his age and be the same size as them for a change!

Neurology:

We have a follow up appointment with the neurologist end of June. So far it seems like the medication is helping and we aren’t seeing any adverse side effects.  We will have to repeat his EEG in a few months so we will know if the medication is working for sure then.

My Health Stuff

Physical Therapy:

My PT is finally finished and I’m supposed to be keeping up with the exercises at home but have been slacking big time. I’m totally feeling the repercussions of not doing the exercises because my hip, back, and knees are constantly hurting me. I haven’t been able to really exercise like I’d like to so I’ve been really trying to focus on diet and keep that in check. Ideally I’d like to lose 10-15lbs so I can have the least amount of stress on my hip as possible. It’s a work in progress.

Anxiety:

I’ve also recently started taking Zoloft to help me manage my anxiety issues. It’s amazing how quiet my brain is now and I’m really glad I finally made the decision to talk to my doctor…again….about it. Anxiety is one thing and I’m sure we all experience it at some point in our life. When it starts to impact our daily activities though, that is when it becomes a problem. I was not able to get through a day without having some degree of an anxiety attack. It would hit me while driving home and I’d have to pull over until it passed. That is when I knew I just needed some additional assistance.

After talking with my dad, who also suffers from anxiety, I realized that this is really ingrained into my DNA and it was only a matter of time before it really came to a head. I’ve tried talk therapy on and off over the last 10-15 years and have never felt as mentally healthy as I do right now. I don’t like the idea of medicating but in this case I think I’m comfortable being on Zoloft the rest of my life if it keeps helping.

Family Stuff and General Two Year Old Life

I keep hearing that three year olds are worse than two year olds. If that is the case then we’re in for some serious trouble next year! This little boy is ALL BOY and stereotypical TWO!!!  Here is what happens when I try to blog…now you can see why it took so long to write again…

Vacations:

We took a family road trip last weekend to St. Louis and had a blast! Thomas had a few “two year moments” but for the most part he was decently behaved. We stayed in a gorgeous hotel and the area around us reminded me a lot of the north side of Chicago. Everyone had a dog! It was only a long weekend so we didn’t have much time to do a lot, plus we had a two year old with us, but we made the best out of the time we had!

I’ve booked Thomas’ first airplane trip for July to see my parents in Tennessee. Jim has to work so it will be just me flying with Thomas alone. I’m sure there will be a blog post about that experience to come. If you have any tips for flying alone with a toddler please send to me!

My car:

Sad to say, my Camry has bit the big one. For a solid month it went in and out of the shop for various problems and eventually it was determined the coolant was leaking over the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. So we traded it in. I know it’s silly to be attached to a vehicle but I really loved that car. It would have been 10 years in September this year and I was really hoping to make it that far. That was the first car I bought on my own and was purchased with the intention of someday carrying my family. It took a lot longer than expected but eventually it did serve its purpose.

On the bright side, I got a new car! SUV to be exact! A 2017 Ford Escape and I lurrrrve it!!!  It’s Cubbie blue and has that new car smell that I love. I can sync my phone to the radio and either play my songs from my phone or connect with Spotify or Pandora. I’m looking forward to making all kinds of new memories with this one. Hopefully it also lasts us 10 years!

I’m a GodMomma!:

I’m so excited to say that I was asked to be a Godmother to one of my best friends’ little boy Aiden. He is just the absolute cutest and I love him SO much!!! I can’t wait until he gets a little older so he and Thomas can play!

In conclusion (that sounds so “college essay-ish” )  , I hope this catches everyone up and we can just pick up and keep moving forward. I love blogging and reaching and connecting with people so thank you for being here. I appreciate you!
